Prioritising Wellbeing: Looking After Yourself When Working with Children

As early childhood professionals, we dedicate ourselves to nurturing and shaping young minds. It’s a rewarding career filled with joy, laughter and meaningful connections, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. Long hours, emotional demands and the responsibility of caring for little ones can take a toll on our wellbeing if we’re not mindful of self-care.

At Atlantis and Tall Tree Early Learning, we recognise that a thriving team is built on a foundation of wellbeing. When educators take care of themselves, they are better equipped to create safe, enriching and engaging environments for children. Our mission of Growing Futures is achieved by fostering resilience, passion and lifelong learning for both children and educators alike. To support this we invest in the wellbeing and professional growth of our team members, ensuring they feel valued and supported every step of the way.

1. Recognise the Emotional Load

Working with children means managing not only their emotions but also our own. It’s normal to feel exhausted or emotionally drained at times. Acknowledging the emotional impact of your work is the first step in managing it effectively. Take time to reflect on your feelings and talk to trusted coworkers or mentors when needed.

2. Set Healthy Boundaries

It’s easy to take work home with you, whether it’s worrying about a child’s development, planning activities or checking emails after hours. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal life helps maintain balance. Where possible, leave work at work and give yourself permission to recharge outside of work hours.

3. Practice Self-Compassion

You won’t get everything perfect every day, and that’s okay! Be kind to yourself and recognise your efforts. Celebrate the small wins—whether it’s helping a child take their first steps, supporting a family or simply making it through a challenging day with a smile on your face.

4. Prioritise Your Physical Wellbeing

Caring for yourself physically is just as important as looking after your emotional wellbeing. Regular movement, staying hydrated and nourishing your body with healthy foods can make a huge difference in your energy levels and resilience. If you’re on your feet all day, take moments to stretch and rest when possible. Seek ways to release the stress of the day with physical activity – go for a walk, hit the gym or do some mindfulness or meditation and watch how it makes a difference to your mood and energy levels.

5. Find Your Support Network

A strong team culture is key to wellbeing. At Atlantis and Tall Tree, our values of TEAM – Trust, Excellence, Above & Beyond and Magic Moments define the way we work together. Surround yourself with colleagues who uplift and support each other. Lean on your team for advice, share experien and create moments of joy together. Whether it’s a quick chat over coffee or a team check-in, staying connected helps prevent burnout.

6. Take Time to Recharge

Outside of work, engage in activities that bring you happiness and relaxation. Whether it’s reading, spending time in nature, exercising or simply having a quiet moment to yourself, prioritising ‘you time’ is essential.

7. Use Support Resources

If you ever feel overwhelmed, know that support is available. At The Atlantis Group and Tall Tree Early Learning we offer an Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and other wellbeing initiatives. Don’t hesitate to seek help when needed—it’s a sign of strength, not weakness.

8. Remember Your ‘Why’

On tough days, remind yourself why you chose this profession. The impact you have on young children’s lives is immeasurable. You are shaping the future, creating a foundation for lifelong learning, and making a difference in the lives of children and families every day.

Your Wellbeing Matters As educators, we often focus so much on the children in our care that we forget to care for ourselves. But to be the best educators possible, we need to ensure we’re looking after our own mental, emotional and physical health. At Atlantis and Tall Tree, we encourage all team members to embrace self-care and prioritise wellbeing—because when we thrive, so do the children in our care.

Let’s commit to making self-care a priority together as we continue to Build Futures for  generations to come through our dedication, passion and support for one another.
